Each of these organizations has members consisting of songwriters, composers, lyricists, and music publishers, and serves as a clearinghouse for collecting royalties on millions of copyrighted musical works. The performance rights given to these three agencies are non-exclusive, which means that you could negotiate separate royalty agreements directly with individual composers and/or publishers to perform their music.

However, such individual negotiations would take a considerable amount of time, effort and money. For this reason, most businesses using publicly performed music choose to obtain a blanket license from ASCAP, SESAC and/or BMI.
