SERVICES TO HONOR VICTIMS, VETERANS.

When terrorists struck Sept. 11 and Operation Enduring Freedom got under way, organizers of one of the annual Memorial Day ceremonies became determined to honor those involved.

``We knew we had to make a memorial, to see the people who were involved in it were properly recognized for their sacrifice,'' said Hal Geer, the producer-director of the Monday service at Valley Oaks Memorial Park in Westlake Village, where 9-11 will be remembered, along with 200 years of American military service.

The purpose of Memorial Day, often forgotten amid the day off, barbecues and shopping sales, will take center stage this weekend at events around the region.

Veterans of wars past will be honored, while those who perished in the attacks last fall or are fighting today's war on terrorism Terrorist acts and the threat of Terrorism have occupied the various law enforcement agencies in the U.S. government for many years. The Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996, as amended by the usa patriot act  will be forefront in many minds.

``(We) should never forget the price people paid for this wonderful life, this wonderful country,'' Geer said.

Events across the area include:

--A candlelight vigil A candelight vigil is an outdoor assembly of people carrying candles, held after sunset. Such events are typically held either to protest at the suffering of some marginalized group of people, or in memory of lives lost to some disease, disaster, massacre or other tragedy.  will be hosted at 7 p.m. tonight at Joshua Memorial Park, 808 E. Lancaster Blvd., Lancaster. Vice Mayor Henry Hearns will be the featured speaker at the event, sponsored by Marine Corps League Detachment 930.

Brigadier Gen. John Gong of the 40th Infantry Division of the California National Guard The California National Guard is the component of the United States National Guard in the U.S. state of California. It comprises both Army and Air National Guard components.  will speak at 9:30 a.m. Monday during Glendale's Memorial Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial, Broadway and Isabel Street.

The program will also feature Mayor Rafi Manoukian Rafi Manoukian is a former member of the city council in Glendale, California. He was recently notified that he has been selected by the Board of Directors and the Selection Committee of the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO) as a recipient of the 2006 Ellis Island  and a rendition of the national anthem by Glendale resident Christine Mason, accompanied by the infantry's band.

--The Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  Veterans Memorial Committee will host a Memorial Day program at 10 a.m. Monday at Eternal Valley Memorial Park, 23287 N. Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling , Newhall. The program will feature music by the Santa Clarita Concert Band and a speech by Assemblyman Keith Richman, R-Granada Hills. For information call Kathy VanDuzee at (661) 296-0882.

--Retired Navy Capt. Tom Craft will speak at a ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at Joshua Memorial Park, 808 E. Lancaster Blvd., Lancaster, hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7283 and its Ladies Auxiliary. --Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10049 will present a Memorial Day program at 10 a.m. Monday at Simi Valley Cemetery, 1461 Thompson Lane. The program will include participants from Moose Lodge 1902, Elks Lodge 2492, Masonic Lodge 806 and the Knights of Columbus Knights of Columbus, American Roman Catholic society for men, founded (1882) at New Haven, Conn. (where its headquarters are still located), by Father Michael J. McGivney. .

--Monsignor Edmund Renehan will celebrate a Memorial Day Mass at 10 a.m. Monday at the Good Shepherd Cemetery, 43121 70th St. W, Quartz Hill.

--A patriotic band concert will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. at Valley Oaks Memorial park, 5600 Lindero Canyon Road, Westlake Village. The event is co-sponsored by the Conejo-Simi Chapter of the Retired Officers Association and Pierce Brothers Mortuary.

--The Valley of the Stars Canoga Park Memorial Day Parade will start at 11 a.m. at Sherman Way and Owensmouth Avenue. The parade will head east to De Soto Avenue, south to Vanowen Street and west to Owensmouth. The grand marshal is KABC KABC Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children  newscaster George Lopez, who will be accompanied by state Sen. Richard Alarcon, D-Van Nuys. Canoga Park High School's Western Days will be held at the conclusion of the parade.

--Forest Lawn Memorial-Parks will observe Memorial Day with a musical tribute at 11 a.m. Monday at its Hollywood Hills location, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive. The program will include a performance of the 40th Infantry Division M Band of the California Army National Guard The California Army National Guard is a component of the California National Guard, the United States Army and the United States National Guard. The California Army National Guard is composed of about 20,000 soldiers. , a 21-gun salute and placement of a memorial wreath honoring veterans of all wars. --State Sen. W.J. ``Pete'' Knight, R-Palmdale, and Palmdale Mayor James Ledford will be among the speakers at a service at 11 a.m. Monday at Desert Lawn Memorial Park, 2200 E. Ave. S, Palmdale. Residents interested in installing American flags at the grave sites should meet at Desert Lawn at 8 a.m. Bring a hammer and a flat-head screwdriver.
