ENCINO - A memorial service will be held today for legendary movie theater owner and producer Ted Mann, who died of a stroke Monday. He was 83.

Mann began his movie theater career in 1936 when he leased the struggling Selby Theatre in St. Paul St. Paul

By the time he was 40, he had acquired 25 theaters and drive-ins throughout Minnesota. When the National General Theatre chain, with 276 screens, came on the market, Mann bought it in March 1973. The acquisition included the landmark Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

The re-named Mann Theatres grew to 360 screens throughout the United States. He sold Mann Theatres to Gulf & Western, predecessors to Paramount Communications, in 1986. He remained chairman of the Encino-based chain until 1991.

Mann was born on April 15, 1917, in Wishick, N.D. The eldest of four children, he attended the University of Minnesota (body, education) University of Minnesota - The home of Gopher.

Mann was well-known as a philanthropist. He was the founder and president of the Boy's Club of Minneapolis. He was the founder of Landmark West School for children with dyslexia dyslexia (dĭslĕk`sēə), in psychology, a developmental disability in reading or spelling, generally becoming evident in early schooling. To a dyslexic, letters and words may appear reversed, e.g. . Other organizations that he supported included Childhelp USA and Mount Olivet Rolling Acres. He established the Ted Mann Foundation, which contributes to various charities including the Salvation Army, United Way, the United Jewish Fund and the Boys and Girls boys and girls

Mann is survived by his wife, actress Rhonda Fleming; two daughters, Victoria Mann Simms and Roberta Mann Benson; four grandchildren, and his sister, Edythe Mann.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Hillside Memorial Park, 6001 Centinela Ave., Culver City.
