This marks the third contract with a combined value of over $7 million awarded to the company.

NCDC produces numerous climate publications and responds to data requests from all over the world. SER will provide digital information for NOAA's online library, which will assist scientists and citizens with improved access to over 100 sets of weather data in the national climate database.

SER has been tasked to digitize the data from the US Air Force Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Military weather satellite controlled by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Also called DMSP.  (DMSP DMSP Defense Meteorological Satellite Program

) and meteorological data summary collections from the NOAA central library. The company will enhance NOAA's classification and conversion of massive amounts of weather data by providing data conversion solutions for the Climate Database Modernization Program.

"The core of our business philosophy is designing ways for people to easily extract knowledge to make faster, more informed decisions without manually searching through massive amounts of information," said Carl Mergele, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. , SER. "Within the next three years, NCDC's climate data is expected to jump from 150 terabytes to approximately 1.5 petabytes a year. To prepare for this exponential increase in new weather data, SER is pleased to have the opportunity to bring its technology and services to NCDC."

Today, NCDC's climate data includes more than 175 million documents, 660 million feet of microfilm, 1 million microfiche, and over 1 petabyte One quadrillion bytes (one trillion kilobytes). Also PB, Pbyte and P-byte. See peta, binary values and space/time.

 of digital data.

"The Climate Database Modernization Program is essential to NCDC's mission of promoting global environmental stewardship. SER has been awarded this contract based on a record of providing quality products that meet NCDC budgets and standards," said Ken Davidson, Deputy Director, NCDC. "We are dedicated to selecting the best technologies and services to enhance the public's access to the world's largest active archive of climate data."

NOAA manages global databases for meteorology, oceanography oceanography, study of the seas and oceans. The major divisions of oceanography include the geological study of the ocean floor (see plate tectonics) and features; physical oceanography, which is concerned with the physical attributes of the ocean water, such as , solid earth geophysics, and solar terrestrial sciences. Within NOAA, NCDC is the world's largest active archive of weather data.

About NCDC

The National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), located in Asheville, North Carolina Not to be confused with Ashville.

Asheville is a city in Buncombe County, North Carolina, and is its county seat. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 68,889. It is the largest city in western North Carolina, and continues to grow.
, is the world's largest active archive of atmospheric and climate data. NCDC archives data obtained by the National Weather Service, military services, Federal Aviation Administration Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), component of the U.S. Department of Transportation that sets standards for the air-worthiness of all civilian aircraft, inspects and licenses them, and regulates civilian and military air traffic through its air traffic control , and the Coast Guard, as well as data from voluntary cooperative observers.

NCDC also collects data from around the globe and has more than 150 years of data on hand. The Center provides historical perspectives on climate that are vital to studies on global climate change, the greenhouse effect, and other environmental issues. The Center stores information essential to industry, science, agriculture, hydrology hydrology, study of water and its properties, including its distribution and movement in and through the land areas of the earth. The hydrologic cycle consists of the passage of water from the oceans into the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration (or , transportation, recreation, and engineering.
