SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL RICE MONTH

 HOUSTON, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- September marks the third annual National Rice Month celebration to recognize the importance of American- grown rice, which accounts for over 90 percent of the rice consumed each year in the United States.
 Since National Rice Month was first proclaimed in joint resolution by Congress and sanctioned through a presidential proclamation in 1991, the awareness of rice has been growing and United States consumers have been enjoying rice more often. According to the United States Department of Agriculture in fact, rice consumption is the United States has doubled since 1975, reaching an annual consumption of 22 pounds per capita.
 The trend in increased rice consumption is echoed by a national survey conducted by the USA Rice Council that found 75 percent of American families now eat rice at least once a week, up from 46 percent only 15 years ago; and over 85 percent of all families reported having one or more packages of rice on hand.
 "This research indicates rice consumption will continue to rise," comments Richard Meyers of the USA Rice Council. "The survey shows that Americans feel good about eating rice because along with its great taste and versatility, rice is nutritious, easy to cook, convenient and light on the budget," he adds.
 As part of the National Rice Month celebration, the USA Rice Council is offering a free recipe brochure. "Everything's Better with Rice" is filled with delicious recipes such as Ginger Chicken Salad and Sesame Rice, as well as nutrition tips and basic cooking instructions.
