``A lot of families can't afford the medications, the blood pressure machines, the trips to the dialysis machine,'' Worthen said. ``Insurance pays for some of these things, but then you're just stuck with the bill.''

Worthen learns about needy families through a group she founded, the Children's Kidney Disease Support Group, and from doctors at Cedars-Sinai, UCLA Medical Center UCLA Medical Center is a hospital located on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles in Los Angeles, California. It is rated as one of the top three hospitals in the United States and is the top hospital on the West Coast according to US News & World Report.  and Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.

The money donated to Cedars-Sinai will be used for research, which Worthen hopes will result in better medications for kidney disease sufferers.

``I'm really into that, because hopefully some day the kids won't have to take anti-rejection medications every day, like Dylan does,'' she said.

Dylan has made excellent progress since the surgery, but he will always have to be guarded from germs because of his delicate immune system immune system

 and he will never be able to play contact sports. The Worthens hope to steer him toward activities that are less physically exerting, like golf, but they are just happy that he survived and is doing well.
