SEPATON Advances Leadership Position in the VTL Market with Enhanced Scalability and Performance.

LAS VEGAS -- SEPATON, Inc., a leader in high-performance data protection solutions, today announced from the Gartner Data Center Conference (Booth #71) that it has enhanced the performance and scalability of its flagship S2100(R)-ES2 Virtual Tape Library (VTL), thereby advancing its price/performance leadership. Leveraging SEPATON's unique clustered Scalable Replication Engine Technology (SRE(R)), customers can effectively double the processing power in a single appliance. Further, with more SREs per VTL, the number of tape drives and libraries supported in each appliance has been exponentially expanded.

SEPATON's unique SRE architecture reduces backup and restore windows up to ten times faster than tape. Each SRE node is a processing element that provides two Fibre Channel communication paths into the backup environment and memory subsystems. With this announcement, customers will be able to configure up to eight nodes in a single appliance, doubling the scalability and performance of the previous model. The result is that SEPATON's unique wire speed I/O processing will scale from 150 MB/sec (.54TB/hr) to 2400 MB/sec (8.6TB/hr). With the current implementation, the appliance scales to 32 nodes or 9600 MB/sec with today's Fibre Channel technology.

SEPATON software emulates the functionality of a variety of tape libraries, allowing customers to use SEPATON's solutions without changing their driver software, backup application, backup policies or procedures. With this announcement, the S2100-ES2 will provide support for IBM 3592 drive and 3584 library emulations and up to 192 virtual Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs) of any mix of tape drives and libraries per node for a maximum of 1536 in a single VTL appliance. The previous version provided for a maximum of 64 tape drives and 16 libraries per node or a limit of 256 tape drives and 64 libraries per VTL. Additionally, the number of virtual cartridges supported in the system increases from 5,000 to virtually limitless.

Pricing and Availability

Customers can start with an entry-level configuration priced at under $45,000 at .54TB/hr with 4.8TB of storage by adding SREs and storage to meet their exact performance and capacity needs. An S2100-ES2 with eight SRE nodes starts at under $780,000 at 8.6TB/hr with 80TB of storage. This new functionality begins to ship in December.
