The best in senior golf, tennis, bowling and even backgammon backgammon (băk`găm'ən, băk'găm`ən), game of chance and skill played by two persons upon a specially marked board divided by a space, called the bar, into two tables (inner table and outer table), each of which has 12  will win prizes next week in the Senior Sports Festival starting Tuesday.

The 10th annual festival opens with an award ceremony at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Adult Recreation Center, 201 E. Colorado St., and ends with a barbecue and closing ceremony at Verdugo Park, 1621 Canada Blvd., on May 8.

Participants must be 50 or older, and must provide a birth certificate or driver's license Noun 1. driver's license - a license authorizing the bearer to drive a motor vehicle

 to prove it. Fees for the sports events range from $6 to $25.

Events include:

Backgammon, 10 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Adult Recreation Center, 201 E. Colorado St. $6 per person.

Billiards billiards, any one of a number of games played with a tapered, leather-tipped stick called a cue and various numbers of balls on a rectangular, cloth-covered slate table with raised and cushioned edges. , 9 a.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at the Adult Recreation Center, 201 E. Colorado St.; and 9 a.m. Tuesday at Sparr Heights Senior Center, 1613 Glencoe Way. $6 per person.

Bowling for singles, doubles and teams, 1 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Jewel City Bowl, 135 S. Glendale Ave. $6 per person

Scrabble Scrabble

Game in which two to four players compete in forming words with lettered wooden tiles on a 225-square board. Words spelled out by letters on the tiles interlock like words in a crossword puzzle. Words are scored by adding up the point values of their letters.

Fun Walk, 10 a.m. May 8 at Verdugo Park, 1621 Canada Blvd. $6 per person.

Golf, 7:30 a.m. shotgun start A Shotgun Start is a golf tournament format in which all groups of players tee off simultaneously from different holes. Each hole on a course will be the tee off hole for each foursome. Group 1 would start from hole 1, Group 2 from hole 2, etc.  Wednesday at Scholl Canyon Golf Course, 3800 E. Glenoaks Blvd., $25 per person.

Lawn bowling lawn bowling: see bowls. , 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Adult Recreation Center, 201 E. Colorado St. $6 per person.

Tennis, Tuesday through Friday at Fremont Park Tennis Courts, 600 W. Hahn. Call (818) 241-6022 for times.

Events can be canceled for insufficient participation.
