SENIORS SHOW HOSPITAL WHERE THEY STAND POSSIBLE TCU SHUTDOWN HIT.

From a wheelchair, Maithonis hoisted her cardboard sign while recounting two separate stays at the skilled nursing center -- one to recover from a hip injury and the other for her ankle.

It's the second senior picket outside the hospital in two months led by Dr. Gene Dorio of the Committee Against Closing the TCU, and Brad Berens, executive director of the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  Committee on Aging.

``There is a validity to this -- the government doesn't pay enough to (reimburse TCU care to) the hospital,'' Dorio said. ``That's the unfortunate side to it. But we're hoping there will be other options.''

They include opening a skilled nursing center -- nonprofit or otherwise -- independent from the hospital. Dorio said the committee is planning a Town Hall meeting June 8 at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center in Newhall.

Dorio said he also plans to recruit the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  City Council tonight, while Berens is slated to meet Newhall Memorial executives this week.
