SENIOR-FRIENDLY VILLAGE BLOOM DOWNTOWN TRANSFORMATION INCLUDES HOUSING.

Byline: Jim Skeen Staff Writer

PALMDALE - The city's transformation of the neighborhood between the Civic Center and Courson Park into a senior-friendly village is expected to begin with construction of an apartment complex and a new senior center.

Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Housing Development Corp., a nonprofit organization Nonprofit Organization

``It's been a long time in planning and working through the process,'' said Alfredo Izmajtovich, the organization's director of acquisition. ``Now that everything is lined up we're excited about getting construction started.''

The complex will have 67 one-bedroom units and eight two-bedroom units, constructed in the same Spanish-Mediterranean style as the Civic Center.

The city is providing the land for $1 year for 65 years with the restriction that the units are rented to very low-income senior citizens.

Starting about the same time will be the construction of a new senior center on 3.5 acres south of Avenue Q-9 and east of Poncitlan Square. The center, projected to cost $4 million, will be roughly 13,500 square feet and will replace the 9,700-square-foot center that was built in 1955 south of Courson Park.

The new senior center is expected to be completed in 2006, said Michael Adams

The park component is still being worked out, but in general the city is looking at something between two and three acres in size with amenities geared toward seniors, such as shuffleboard shuffleboard, sport in which players use cue sticks to push disks onto a scoring diagram at either end of a concrete or terrazzo court. The court is 52 ft (15.85 m) long and 6 ft (1.83 m) wide. ``We're looking at a very substantial redevelopment of our downtown,'' said Mayor Jim Ledford.

The second phase of the project will involve the construction of about 80 apartment units. That phase will likely cost about $11 million and will run about a year behind the first phase.

Two other phases will finish out the housing component of the project. Their timelines have not been determined yet.
