SENIOR SPORTS CENTER TO HOST GAMES.

Byline: Angela Randazzo Staff Writer

MOORPARK - Local seniors can win a gold, silver or bronze medal - just like at the upcoming Olympics - during the fifth annual Senior Games at the Moorpark Senior Center.

The opening ceremony will be at the center Sept. 20, kicking off a month's worth of competitions. Awards will be presented at a barbecue Oct. 17.

Participants are gearing up for the event through clinics that began this month.

``The challenge is overcoming the difficulties because the grass is uneven, even though it's been newly mowed. There's humps in it and the ball doesn't always go straight,'' Maxwell said.

Last year, more than 600 seniors participated in such events as basketball, bingo bingo

``The games are a wonderful social outlet, and it's a great way for people to meet each other,'' said Carol Ghens, Moorpark Senior Center coordinator. ``The games give people something to look forward to and work toward.''

Anyone 55 or older can participate. There is no entry fee and membership in the Moorpark Senior Center is not required.

Ten people have signed up so far for the Oct. 16 croquet competition, including Elaine McGovern, 63, of Moorpark. A couple years ago, McGovern won medals in six events.

Another competitor in the croquet event is Morrie Abramson, 71, of Moorpark. He doesn't have a game plan but for Abramson winning isn't everything.

``We having a good time. That's the most important thing,'' said Abramson.
