NEWHALL -- The Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Senior Center offers a variety of programs, mostly at the center, 22900 Market St., Newhall. Trips and tours info available

The center's Trips & Tours Department will host the Collette Tours Company at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Activity Rooms 1 and 2. Collette will present information on its Branson Musical Getaway, scheduled for May 6, and its San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  Getaway, scheduled for Oct. 1, 2007.

Anyone interested in taking one or both of these trips is invited to attend. For information, call the trips department at the center, Ext. 111.

Driver safety program offered

The AARP AARP, a nonprofit, nonpartisan national organization dedicated to "enriching the experience of aging"; membership is open to people age 50 or older. Founded in 1958 by Ethel Percy Andrus as American Association of Retired Persons, AARP now has over 30 million  Driver Safety Program will be offered from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday. This course covers the rules of the road as well as safety tips, and completion of this eight-hour class will earn each participant a three-year certificate, and for drivers 50 and over, an auto insurance credit. The instructor will be Roger Oleson.

Hitchcock film to be screened

Senior Cinema will present ``The Trouble With Harry'' at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 13. This Alfred Hitchcock comedy thriller thrill·er

The cinema event is wheelchair-friendly. For information on group senior transportation, call the Senior Center several days in advance of the showing.

Volunteer drivers needed for meals

The Senior Center is in need of volunteer drivers to serve a minimum of 2 1/2 hours a week for Home-Delivered Meals to the homebound home·bound

. Drivers must be available from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. one day per week. Every Monday through Friday, the center delivers about 300 meals daily in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. .

For many, the volunteer driver may be the only person that a senior will see that day. Lives are often saved with this one-on-one delivery system. Call the center to volunteer.

Rides for vets to appointments

Rides are available for veterans who need to get to the Sepulveda V.A. Hospital for medical appointments. The veterans will be picked up and dropped off at their homes by a van driven by a volunteer from the Disabled American Veterans The Disabled American Veterans, or DAV, is an organization for disabled veterans that helps them and their families through various means. It currently has over 1.2 million members.
