Winger was the only California student selected in a program that weighs academics and school and community involvement. The honor comes from the California Golden Boys State Program, which Winger attended in June in Sacramento. His selection was announced on the last day of the American Legion-sponsored, weeklong mock government experience attended by close to 1,000 boys from across California. As a finalist, Winger joins 99 other students from across the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. Winger has maintained a 4.6 grade-point average at Hart, is editor-in-chief of his school's newspaper, volunteers for Safe Rides and tutors fellow students in math and science. He was selected to attend Boys State through an interview process and was one of two representatives from Hart. The Samsung scholarship funds come from the earnings of a $5 million endowment given by Samsung in recognition of U.S. servicemen and -women who served during the Korean War Korean War, conflict between Communist and non-Communist forces in Korea from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953.
