SELES MOVES TO THE FINAL DAVENPORT HAS AN EASY TIME.

Byline: Joe Stevens Staff Writer

MANHATTAN BEACH Manhattan Beach, city (1990 pop. 32,063), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1912. It is a residential and beach community with an oil refinery and nearby factories that produce transportation and electrical equipment, computers, and pottery.  - Monica Seles went flat.

But luckily for her, the flatness lasted just one set.

Seles recovered from an ugly second set Saturday night to beat No. 1 Martina Hingis Martina Hingis (pronounced: hɪŋˈɡɪs) (born September 30, 1980 in Košice, Slovakia) is a former World No. 1 Swiss tennis player. , 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, in the estyle.com Classic semifinals at Manhattan Country Club. She has won three Grand Slam singles tournaments: the 1998 U.S. Open, 1999 Wimbledon, and the 2000 Australian Open. .

``In the second set, I went flat, and Martina started playing much better,'' Seles said. ``I was tough enough to hold my serve in the third set, and that made the difference.''

The third set was straightforward. Seles broke Hingis once and held her serve five times to win.

in the next game. Seles went down, 15-40, and Hingis warded off three break points to hold serve.

``I knew she could step it up,'' Hingis said. ``I had a chance to break, and she broke. After that, she was serving well and I didn't have many chances.''

With Seles ahead 2-0, the momentum evened out.

Seles was not dominant in the third set, but it was a stark contrast from her erratic play in the 6-1 second set. It also was a contrast from the first set, in which Seles broke Hingis three times.

Seles was having such a hard time in the second set that Hingis only was pushed to deuce in two of the games she won. Hingis had three break points in that second set, converted them all and seemed to be poised for victory. But Seles recovered.

It wasn't nearly as dramatic as Seles' three-set victory Friday night over Serena Williams Serena Jameka Williams, (born September 26, 1981) is an American former World No. 1 ranked female tennis player who has won eight Grand Slam singles titles and an Olympic gold medal in women's doubles.[1]. .

``The only thing I did different is that I had I had more movement against Serena,'' Seles said. ``But it's hard to compare the two matches because they're such different players. I had the bad second set against Martina.''

Hingis looked shaken by her loss. She also lost in the semifinals of the Acura Classic The Acura Classic was a WTA Tour affiliated professional tennis tournament for women, held every summer at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California. ``How would you feel?'' Hingis said. ``Probably not too good.''

It sounds as if Hingis will not be hopping on Seles' bandwagon.

``It's gonna be difficult for Monica,'' she said. ``It's gonna be tough against a fresh Lindsay. But who knows? A miracle happens all the time.''

Davenport eliminated No. 5 Nathalie Tauziat Nathalie Tauziat (born October 17, 1967, in Bangui, Central African Republic) is a former professional tennis player from France. Career

Tauziat, one of the few serve-and-volley players on the tour, never had a break point.

Davenport played so well that maybe the hardest part of the match was warming up - at least, the hardest part mentally.

``When we were being introduced on the court, I heard the players she's beaten, which were (Jelena) Dokic and (Kim) Clijsters,'' Davenport said. ``Right then, I was thinking, `Oh, this is going to be pretty tough. She's playing well.' ''
