ATLANTA, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Home Depot (NYSE: HD), America's largest home improvement retailer, today announced that it will begin providing food service on a test basis at approximately 16 stores in four markets as early as this fall.
The service will be called "Depot Diner."
The typical Depot Diner will comprise approximately 1,200 square feet in the front of a Home Depot store and offer an assortment of branded foods from a combination of vendors. The Depot Diners are envisioned to operate during normal Home Depot store hours.
"The primary objective of the Depot Diners is to provide an extra convenience for our customers and employees," said The Home Depot Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bernard Marcus. "It is a logical extension of our overall service commitment. We are especially grateful to Freshens Yogurt, McDonalds, and Morrisons Hospitality Group for their assistance in helping us put this new program together."
The Home Depot is developing a series of joint venture arrangements with a number of companies for management of the food service operations. The Home Depot does not plan to operate the food service facilities itself. The joint ventures are being formed with McDonalds, Morrisons Hospitality Group, and possible others as well. Branded foods will be provided by McDonalds, Burger King, The Coca-Cola Company, Freshens Yogurt, Nathans Famous, Pizza Hut, Blimpie International and others. Management companies and branded foods will vary by market.
The initial test markets include Atlanta, Los Angeles, metro New York City, and South Florida.
Atlanta-based Home Depot currently operates 231 full-service, warehouse-style stores in 21 states averaging approximately 98,700 square feet in size. The stores sell approximately 30,000 different kinds of building materials, home improvement products and lawn and garden supplies which are sold primarily to do-it-yourselfers but also to home improvement, construction and building maintenance professionals. Founded in 1978, The Home Depot is now widely regarded as the leading retailer in the home improvement industry. Its stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol, "HD," and is included in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index.
