SEIKO EPSON SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH TRIDENT FOR VIDEO ACCELERATOR AND MPEG-1 PLAYBACK SOLUTIONS.MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 23, 1995--Trident Microsystems today announced that SEIKO EPSON Corporation has signed a purchase agreement for Trident's TGUI TGUI Timeline Graphical User Interface TGUI Traffic Management Advisor Graphical User Interface 9660(TM) graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI) Computer display format that allows the user to select commands, call up files, start programs, and do other routine tasks by using a mouse to point to pictorial symbols (icons) or lists of menu choices on the screen as opposed to having to (GUI) accelerator and PC View+(TM) video processor for use in its MPEG-1 playback card. SEIKO EPSON Corp., based in Suwa-Shi, Japan, has agreed to incorporate Trident's 64-bit TGUI9660 GUI accelerator onto its PC-486ME family of desktop computers for the PC-98 platform, a leading design architecture standard in Japan. SEIKO EPSON Corp. will also adopt Trident's PC View+ video processor as part of its standard hardware MPEG-1 solution. The TGUI9660 device is based on Trident's three-in-one design that integrates RAMDAC (Random Access Memory Digital to Analog Converter) The VGA controller chip that maintains the color palette and converts data from memory into analog signals for the monitor. RAMDAC - Random Access Memory Digital-to-Analog Converter , a clock synthesizer and graphics acceleration, all on one chip. Because this device does not require external components for RAMDAC or a clock, SEIKO EPSON Corp. is expected to reduce its costs while obtaining higher operating speeds. "SEIKO EPSON Corp. is a reputable company that demands high-performance and high-quality devices for its PC systems. Its purchase is an endorsement of the leading-edge products that we have developed," stated Frank Lin, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. of Trident. "A deciding factor for SEIKO EPSON Corp. was the level of hardware and software support we can offer. Our in-house expertise on the PC-98 architecture is expected to save SEIKO EPSON Corp. three to six months in localizing its drivers. Furthermore, the high level of software compatibility among all our chipsets is expected to make it easier, quicker and less expensive for SEIKO EPSON Corp. to port to Trident's next generation products." The TGUI9660 device includes an on-chip 135MHz pixel clock and RAMDACs. Additionally, it supports high-quality, live-video playback at no extra cost using on-chip 16-bit VESA Advanced Feature Connector A VESA standard point-to-point channel used to transfer video signals between two video controllers, typically between the display adapter and a video capture or TV board. The Advanced Feature Connector (VAFC) increases the original feature connector from 8 to 32 bits and from 40 to 150 (VAFC See VESA Advanced Feature Connector. ) DACs. Trident's PC View+ video accelerator device is part of a chipset solution for MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs). playback cards that can display and capture live video from laser discs, CDs, VCRs and video cameras.
