Lagos (lā`gŏs, lä`gôs), city (1991 est. pop. 1,274,000), SW Nigeria, on the Gulf of Guinea. It comprises the island of Lagos. Lagos is Nigeria's largest city, its administrative and economic center, and its chief port.
 is Chile's new president. The 61-year old economist and lawyer narrowly defeated right-wing candidate Joaquin Lavin in a second-round election. Lagos is the country's first socialist president since Salvador Allende, who was ousted in 1973 by General Augusto Pinochet.
