 in Canyon Country where College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  plans to open its second campus next spring.

In the first major step of construction, the college board is due to approve a grading contract at a special meeting Thursday, and that work is due to begin in mid-June, James Schrage, the campus dean of physical plant and facilities planning, said Tuesday.

``We're ready for full mobilization See: mobilization. ,'' Schrage said. ``Grading is the last step before we begin actual construction work.''

The Canyon Country Educational Center initially will be in portable buildings, with permanent structures due about three years later, Schrage said. The campus, designed to serve students on the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling  near the northern edge of Canyon Country.

Aquila Landscaping was paid $5,790 to remove the heavy brush from the property -- work being completed well ahead of fire season.

Juan Nolasco Luna of Santa Clarita was paid $17,000 to remove debris and Precision Environmental Inc., also of Santa Clarita, was paid $19,760 to remove hazardous materials -- asbestos asbestos, mineral

The college board is due to award a contract Thursday for the grading. Sealed bids were opened Monday and college officials were assessing the bids and references before presenting their recommendations to the board. The law requires that public agencies choose the lowest responsible bid for such projects.
