PITTSBURGH, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The second annual "Ice Ball" banquet honoring patients who have undergone a new procedure for cancer of the prostate will be held Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Pittsburgh Golf Club, Pittsburgh.
The "Ice Ball" originated with Jeffrey K. Cohen, M.D., a urologist at Allegheny General Hospital, assistant professor of surgery, Medical College of Pennsylvania, and a pioneer in the new cryosurgery procedure for prostate cancer. Cohen created the concept of a formal dinner as a way to honor his patients and provide them with an informal support network. Last year's event at the Duquesne Club was attended by more than 100 people from throughout the United States who were treated by Cohen.
While not a new technology, cryosurgery -- the use of extreme cold to freeze and destroy diseased tissue -- is finding renewed interest among urologists and other specialists because of substantial improvements in technology and equipment.
Cryomedical Sciences, Inc. (CMS) (NASDAQ-NMS: CMSI), a leader in the field of hypothermic medicine, developed the CMS AccuProbe(R), a cryosurgical instrument that keeps pressurized nitrogen cold enough to maintain a liquid state, even when it comes in contact with the warmth of the body.
The proprietary AccuProbe, coupled with advances in imaging technologies which allow real time visualization inside the body, provides physicians with a new alternative for the management of prostate cancer, a disease affecting 160,000 American men each year. The minimally invasive procedure reduces hospitalization time and significantly reduces health care costs, the company said.
