SEATTLE TIMES' 'LIVING WITH AIDS' BOOK RAISES $2,000 FOR CHARITY
SEATTLE, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The Seattle Times publication "Living with AIDS," a collection of columns by award-winning writer Robert O'Boyle, has sold so successfully that The Times has recovered all costs associated with publishing the book and donated $2,000 in profits to the Seattle AIDS Support Group, announced Scene-section editor Terry Tazioli.
The Times printed 5,000 copies in late May of this year and has sold almost 3,000 of them.
"In some ways it's not a surprise that the book has done so well," said Tazioli. "Robert's columns were enormously popular and moving."
O'Boyle's columns chronicled his battle with AIDS in the pages of
The Times from June 1990 until his death on Jan. 6, 1992. Readers wrote that "Robert's words about living and dying have helped me deal with my boyfriend's cancer," and "There was something honest and human in the way he wrote."
O'Boyle had asked that The Seattle AIDS Support Group received the donation. The Seattle AIDS Support Group provides confidential support groups (40 a week) and a drop-in center at no cost for all people with HIV/AIDS and their loved ones, friends and family. O'Boyle participated in one of the support groups and volunteered for the non-profit organization.
O'Boyle and his award-winning column became the subject of national magazine articles, and he became something of a celebrity on the local talk circuit, speaking about the disease, its treatment and the people living with AIDS.
Retail price for "Living with AIDS" is $4.95. It is available by mail order for $6.81 per copy (includes tax, postage and handling) by sending a check payable to "The Seattle Times" and name, address and phone number to The Seattle Times, P.O.
