SEATTLE DENTIST FIRST TO RECEIVE STERILCHEK CERTIFICATE
 FROM DENTAL DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES
SUMMARY: Local Seattle dentist first to receive STERILCHEK(TM) certificate from new Bellevue firm. Founded by two University of Washington professors, Dental Diagnostic Services Inc. is providing Washington state dentists with a service that reduces the risk of contracting infectious diseases from dental visits.
SEATTLE, March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Wayne Yoda, a Seattle dentist who has been practicing for 16 years, was the first Seattle dentist to be recognized for his commitment to patient safety, Dental Diagnostic Services announced today. Yoda was the first dentist to sign up for the STERILCHEK(TM) program, developed by Bellevue, Wash.- based Dental Diagnostic Services Inc. He has been joined by more than 60 area dentists who have since enrolled in the STERILCHEK service since the company's startup announcement in November. For clients to receive a certificate of participation in the STERILCHEK program, they must demonstrate compliance with the guidelines for the routine testing of their sterilizers.
The service uses biological spores to verify whether or not a dental office sterilizer is working properly. "In the dental office, sterilization equipment is a primary defense against cross infection," commented Dr. Bernard Moncla, co-founder and president, "and because of the invasive nature of dental procedures, a malfunctioning sterilizer can expose dental patients to the risk of contracting diseases like hepatitis and HIV, the virus that causes AIDS."
A recent article in The Journal of The American Dental Association(A) found that sterilizers malfunction about 18 percent of the time. "To our dental clients," added Dr. James Clagett, company co-founder and former University of Washington (UW) professor, "an 18-percent chance of failure is too high. Laws are also now being proposed in Washington by the Washington State Dental Disciplinary Board to require dentists to conduct at least monthly spore tests to determine whether or not they are working properly."
"At a time when people are demanding economical health care, they might also want to consider the financial benefits of safe health care," commented Yoda. "In the 1990s, every sterilizer in any dental or medical office should have a second opinion."
Co-founder Moncla was a faculty member of the UW Departments of Periodontics and Oral Biology from 1984 to 1991. Clagett was a tenured professor of Microbiology-Immunology and Periodontics at the UW Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, respectively. Both have been widely published in academic journals and have consulted or managed public health-related efforts for major corporations.
The STERILCHEK method is approved by OSHA, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Dental Association (ADA). ADA and CDC guidelines indicate weekly testing is appropriate for most dental practitioners. For information on STERILCHEK, dentists, physicians and the general public can contact J.
