Saugus' Shannon Murakami lived up to her billing as the state's second-ranked girls' cross country runner Friday at the season-opening Seaside Seaside.

1 City (1990 pop. 38,901), Monterey co., W Calif., on Monterey Bay, in a fruit region; founded 1887, inc. 1954. Its economy is based largely upon tourism. California State Univ. Monterey Bay is there, on the former site of Fort Ord.

Murakami won the junior girls' race, completing the three-mile course in 17 minutes, 18 seconds. It was best girls' time by 29 seconds.

``I thought I could have run harder,'' Murakami said. ``But no one was here to push me.''

Dunn trailed Oak Park's Courtney Lightfoot by as much as 60 meters with only one mile remaining, but beat her by seven seconds.

Oak Park's Anthony Pondella won the junior boys' race in 15:31, the second-best boys' time Friday. He edged Calabasas' Kyle <noinclude></noinclude>
