SEARS PLANS 75 'OFFICE CENTERS' IN 1993, 13 OPENING NOW

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Continuing its national roll-out plan, Sears Merchandise Group announced today it will open "Office Center at Sears Brand Central" computer and home-office equipment departments in about 75 Sears retail stores by the end of 1993.
Thirteen of the new full-service departments will open May 28 in stores in Alaska, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, and Washington.
Over the last two years, Sears has opened 164 Office Centers in stores in major metropolitan markets around the country. By year-end, Sears will have Office Center departments in about 250 stores.
"As more and more of our customers participate in the home-office and work-at-home trend, we are targeting markets for Office Centers to meet their needs," said William L. Salter, vice president of Sears Brand Central. "Our specialized format offers customers top name brands, night and weekend shopping convenience, and knowledgeable sales associates who have had three weeks of product training that prepares them to work with customers and recommend business solutions for computing and office equipment needs."
The Office Center is an in-store department that focuses specifically on the needs of small businesspeople, telecommuters and people who work in home-based businesses by offering about 85 name brands of office equipment and accessories.
"At Office Centers, customers benefit from Sears long-standing commitment to satisfaction guaranteed, our pricing pledge and the SearsCharge line of credit," Salter said.
An Office Center department occupies an average of about 2,000 square feet of selling floor space and is within Sears Brand Central, the retailer's home appliances and consumer electronics superstore. Office Centers specialize in selling and servicing desktop and laptop computers including powerful 486 models, printers, software, word processors, facsimile machines, office telephones, cellular telephones, answering machines, calculators and equipment accessories.
Apple, AT&T, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Motorola, Packard-Bell and Xerox are a few of the name brands offered at Office Centers. Office Centers also offer software by Borland, Lotus, Microsoft and other leading brands.
Office Center account executives participate in a comprehensive, three-week training program addressing products and customer applications.
