SEARS JUNE REVENUES RISE 12.9 PERCENT

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Sears Merchandise Group said its total domestic store sales from continuing operations for the five weeks ended July 3 were $2.27 billion, 12.9 percent above restated sales of $2.01 billion in the same period last year. Comparable domestic store sales were 12.0 percent higher for the period. Continuing operations exclude results from selected home improvement services which Sears no longer sells directly, and results from Sears Business Centers, which have been sold.
Arthur C. Martinez, Sears Merchandise Group chairman and chief executive officer, said, "Our strong sales trend of the past several months continued in June as a majority of our businesses reported double-digit percentage sales increases, with particular strength in all parts of apparel, major appliances, home office equipment, and seasonal lines, including sporting goods, patio furniture and grills. Automotive tire sales also were up 21 percent.
"These continuing sales increases demonstrate the customer's response to the many programs that we are putting into place to provide them with the value-oriented merchandise, exciting shopping environments and customer service levels they expect from Sears," he said.
Sears said that in June it opened a Homelife furniture store in Webster, Texas, near Houston, and will open another this month in Flint, Mich. In addition, the company will open a Sears hardware store in Wheaton, Ill., west of Chicago.
For the five weeks ended July 3, Sears Merchandise Group reported gross revenues from continuing operations of $2.89 billion, 8.5 percent above the $2.66 billion in the same period of 1992. Excluded from continuing operations are gross revenues from catalog sales (except direct response) and sales from Pinstripes Petites stores, which have been closed.
For the 22 weeks ended July 3, Sears Merchandise Group reported gross revenues from continuing operations of $11.75 billion, 3.7 percent above the $11.33 billion in the same period of 1992.
