SEARS CAUSES RETAILING TO LEAD JANUARY LAYOFF LIST

 NEW YORK, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The extraordinary pace of layoff announcements since Jan. 1 now totals 83,307 through Jan. 26.
 The layoff daily rate is 3,204 with the Sears Roebuck figure and 1,281 without, for 26 days.
 The figures are based on daily tabulations by international outplacement consultants Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.
 With the announcement on Monday of 50,000 to be laid off by Sears Roebuck, retailing leads the layoff list followed by aerospace, transportation and computer industries.
 James E. Challenger (312-332-5790), president of the firm, said currently approximately 60 percent are finding new employment with small to medium sized companies, 20 percent to large companies and 20 percent are becoming entrepreneurs.
 Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., on Feb. 1 will issue a 31-day report on January layoffs, with a chart identifying the company, layoff figure and industry.
