SEARS APPOINTS THORNTON VICE PRESIDENT, AUTOMOTIVE

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- James D. Thornton, 44, was appointed vice president, Sears Automotive, effective May 1, succeeding Albert F. Dombrowski, 55, who has accepted the early retirement incentive program.
Thornton will be responsible for the more than 800 Sears Tire and Auto Centers and will report to Paul A. Baffico, president of Sears Automotive Group. The board of directors of Sears will be asked to elect Thornton to his new post at its next regular meeting.
"Jim has been instrumental in refocusing Sears Automotive on our core tire and battery businesses," said Baffico. "His experience with our field organization, both in our auto centers and as national business manager in the home office, will be a key to improving Sears Automotive's performance."
Arthur C. Martinez, Sears Merchandise Group chairman and chief executive officer said today's announcement continues the refinement of the Merchandise Group's management structure.
Thornton previously was national business manager for Sears Automotive, a position he had held since March 1992. He joined Sears in July 1969 as a management trainee in New Orleans. Since then he has held a variety of field management and headquarters assignments including store management positions in Virginia and North Carolina.
Thornton, a native of Ashford, Ala., is a 1969 graduate of Talladega College in Talladega, Ala.
