SEARS ANNOUNCES RELIEF EFFORTS FOR HURRICANE ANDREW
MIAMI, Aug. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Sears, Roebuck and Co. today

announced a series of efforts to help aid Louisiana and South Florida residents devastated by Hurricane Andrew.
"We realize this is a difficult time for the residents of Louisiana and South Florida due to Hurricane Andrew," said Edward A. Brennan, chairman and chief executive officer of Sears, Roebuck and Co. "So to help make things a little easier, all of us at Sears would like to offer some assistance to get our customers and their families back on their feet again."
Sears will begin running newspaper and radio ads this weekend in Louisiana and South Florida announcing these services available to affected residents.
 Sears Catalog Donation:
Sears Catalog will donate about $3 million worth of men's, women's and children's apparel and shoes to Louisiana and South Florida residents affected by the disaster. Ten trucks from Sears Logistics Services (SLS) will be used to ship more than 125,000 pieces of merchandise. Eight trucks will head to Florida; the remaining two will be transported to Louisiana. Gifts In Kind, a non-profit organization, will be responsible for distributing the items to needy residents. The goods will be donated to Louisiana and South Florida residents beginning next week. Gifts In Kind will broadcast information on how needy residents can get the items.
 Water Donation:
Since Andrew struck, Sears has contributed thousands of gallons of drinking water and ice in South Florida. The water was trucked in from as far away as Maine and distributed to residents in parking lots of Sears stores in Dade County.
 SearsCharge:
Temporary shopping passes will be issued for SearsCharge customers whose credit cards were destroyed or lost during the storm. The pass enables customers to charge any of the items they may need now to keep things moving forward. In addition, Sears is offering special financing arrangements -- Sears Delayed Billing Option -- for customers using their SearsCharge cards. If customers are temporarily unable to make their scheduled monthly payment due to the loss of earnings or the need to invest funds in emergency necessities, call Sears Atlanta Credit Central, at 1-800-669-8415. Extra associates are being assigned to handle both credit customer service accounts, process new SearsCharge cards or answer customers' questions.
 In-Store Savings:
Residents who live in the area affected by Hurricane Andrew will receive 10 percent off any regular and sale-priced items they purchase now through Saturday, Sept. 12, 1992. These discounts also apply to catalog purchases. Every effort is being made to keep emergency items in stock.
 Additional Service Technicians:
Sears has assigned additional repair service technicians to the South Florida region to help customers assess damage to their household items and appliances ruined as a result of Andrew. Sears service technicians will provide free estimates to customers in their home and can begin the task of repairing their major name brand appliances. Customers can call 1-800-4-REPAIR for more information. In addition, Sears repair technicians are available to provide 24-hour emergency repair service.
 Allstate Assistance:
Allstate Insurance representatives are available to assist customers in Louisiana and South Florida in filing claims and arranging for emergency insurance funds. Allstate policyholders can call 1-800-767-9717 for assistance. Allstate customers will also be able to cash emergency relief checks at Sears stores.
