SEARLE MEDICAL EXECUTIVE RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS AWARD FROM AMERICAN
 COLLEGE OF CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY
WASHINGTON, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Searle Senior Vice President of Corporate Medical and Scientific Affairs J.A. "Tony" Boyle, M.D., is the 1992 recipient of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology's Honorary Fellowship Award at a ceremony today. The prestigious award acknowledges Dr. Boyle's contributions to clinical pharmacology and drug development.
"It is indeed an honor to be selected to join the long list of distinguished fellows who have been honored by the American College of Clinical Pharmacology," said Dr. Boyle. "I have enjoyed being part of the advancement of science and drug development. Improving the quality of life for others makes a difference in my life as well."
Dr. Boyle has advised a number of leading pharmaceutical companies on scientific issues for nearly 20 years. In his current position with Searle since 1986, Dr. Boyle is responsible for directing Medical and Scientific Affairs registration activities for marketed and in-licensed products.
As part of his acceptance of his award, Dr. Boyle spoke on the misperception of drug pricing in America. His speech will be published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.
"It's important to note that the American pharmaceutical industry is currently investing more than 16 percent of sales back in research and development compared to the American research and development average which is running under four percent of sales," he said. "Private industry initiatives have resulted in the approval for marketing of 95 percent of the 100 most prescribed drugs in the U.S., compared with 3 percent created by universities and the government. This price of innovation is rising steadily, with the average cost per new chemical entity reaching over $400 million. This exemplifies the dedication pharmaceutical companies have to the future of health in our nation."
Previous recipients of this award include Dr. Louis Lasagna, dean, Faculty of Medicine, Sackler School of Medicine, Tufts University, Boston; Dr. Robert Temple of the Food and Drug Administration; and Dr. E.M. Vaughn Williams, professor of pharmacology, Oxford, England.
Dr. Boyle received his medical degree from Glasgow University in 1960 and his Ph.D. in Endocrinology there in 1967. He became a member of the Royal College of Physicians in London in 1965, and a Fellow in 1974. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Dr. Boyle resides with his wife in Lake Forest, Ill.
