left the Mountain High ski area to snowboard in an off-limits area and got lost, eventually finding the closed campground 1 1/2 miles from the ski resort on the opposite side of the ridge, sheriff's deputies said.

``They were tired and hungry, but they were said to be in good condition,'' said Sgt. Vince Burton of the Palmdale sheriff's station.

A helicopter crew spotted the boys, frantically waving to get attention, at the Cabin Flat campground just after 7 a.m. Monday, nearly 15 hours after they were supposed to be picked up by their parents.

The boys were dropped off at 10 a.m. Sunday to snowboard. When they didn't show up for the return ride home at 4 p.m., their parents called authorities.

``We were trying to go off another side, but we just went, like, 15 feet too far - left instead of right - and just went off the wrong side,'' Andrew Dunning, 14, told reporters after the rescue.

Search and Rescue Team spotted the boys' tracks at midnight and followed them until about 3 a.m., when the search was halted by the storm. The searchers spent the night in a shelter they built from packed snow.

As first light broke, the rescue teams on the ground resumed their search. Then the sheriff's helicopter crew spotted the two boys waving their arms frantically and landed to pick them up.

The helicopter flew them back to the command post set up at Mountain High, where they were checked by paramedics. The boys were released to their parents after they were examined.

The boys told rescue crews that they came on the campground restroom by chance.

The search was the second for the weekend.

Another snowboarder, Charles Cetto, 21, of Canyon Country was missing Friday night. He was found about 11 a.m. Saturday, also in the Cabin Flat area.

Cetto was in good condition and declined paramedics' offer to take him to a hospital, officials said. He told rescuers that he had taken shelter in a campground restroom - the same one the boys used two nights later - and stuffed wadded-up toilet paper inside his clothing to keep himself Warm.

His girlfriend reported him missing after he failed to return home Friday night from his snowboarding trip.

Sheriff's officials said they are unsure if they will try to charge Cetto for the costs of his rescue.
