The company said Wednesday that it is partnering with Clear Channel Entertainment to undertake an open casting call for a long-legged fashionista to star in ``Barbie Live in Fairytopia!''

``She cut her teeth in movies, now she's ready to tackle Broadway,'' hooted Chris Byrne Chris Byrne co-founded the band Black 47 with Larry Kirwan in 1989. He also said the tour was both a ``brilliant idea'' and ``a license to print money.''

That's very much what Mattel wants to hear about its plans to revive its top-selling doll, which saw sales slip 15 percent in the first quarter.

The Fairytopia line tends to appeal to a younger demographic. It was one of the strongest performers in the substantial Barbie stable of brands. With 60 weeks of shows and 80 performances for 1,500 to 3,000 ticket- holders, Mattel hopes to hitch the brand to those fairy wings.

``It's sort of 'I can be in the Barbie world with them, won't that be great?''' said Richard Dickson, senior vice president of Mattel Brands consumer products. ``It's a nice conduit to give mom and daughter a way to spend more time with the brand.''

In addition to ticket revenue, the company plans on leveraging the tour to move more dolls and related products in gift shops. Taking the Barbie image out of just the toy realm has proved successful in the past, with the Fairytopia DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

But in casting the star of the show, Mattel and Clear Channel could find themselves with a unique challenge. Dickson said the company would be seeking an actress with athletic capabilities, singing and dancing skills.

Nailing down someone with Barbie's distinctive proportions, however, could be a little more difficult to come by. Company officials just said they will hold an open casting call, with the details still being worked out.
