SEAGATE SOFTWARE UNVEILS THREE PHASE PRODUCT ROADMAP: INTEGRATED SOFTWARE WILL MANAGE BUSINESS POLICIES AND NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE; Seagate Software Details Roadmap for Uniting Network and Systems Management Products of Acquired Companies: Network Computing, NetLabs, Frye, Creative Interactive Technologies, OnDemand and Calypso.

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 18, 1996--Seagate Software's Network and Systems Management Group (NSMG) delivers its three-phase roadmap to integrate the products of acquired companies and those of strategic partners into software suites that for the first time will provide a common view of network infrastructure and business policies governing system, network and application management. All Seagate system and network management products will be "vertically" integrated under the Seagate Enterprise Architecture (SEA) framework, which specifies a unified user interface, a shared data repository See repository. , and common services for installation, software distribution, security and scheduling.

Software product lines Software Product Lines, or software product line development, refers to engineering methods, tools and techniques for creating a collection of similar software systems from a shared set of software assets using a common means of production.  will support desktop management, server management, enterprise-wide automated operations and application management, combining technologies originally developed by NetLabs, Network Computing Storing and/or running applications in servers in a network. . The roadmap specifies point products that will support Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  environments with advanced applications for software distribution, job scheduling In a large computer, establishing a job queue to run a sequence of programs over any period of time such as a single shift, a full day, etc. , event correlation Event Correlation is the processes involved with reducing a large number of incident alerts to a much smaller, more manageable number within automated monitoring and incident/problem management in a Support Management System.  and automated response and a suite of best-of-breed NetWare and Windows NT products for the workgroup and Windows NT client/server markets.

It was a majority owned subsidiary of Seagate Technology, the largest independent disc drive and related components company in the world.  point products, as well as management software suites, will share data and services and be accessible through the unified user interface from a central management station or distributed stations. " for NetWare, Windows NT workgroups and Windows NT client/server and will connect to the SEA framework for end-to-end corporate IT management.

Robert Quillin, Seagate Software, NSMG vice president of product management, said, "Completion of the Seagate Software roadmap gives us the direction to provide our customers with the first set of software suites and point tools that integrates desktop, server and network management. Vertical integration from applications built on the SEA framework will make it possible to combine the traditional view of network and system components with the business view of the company: scheduling, policies, application availability and service-level agreements. Managers at last will be able to determine the impact of infrastructure problems on business-critical applications such as email, financials, data mining and the Web."

Phase I, Through December 1996

Products scheduled for completion in this phase include Windows NT point products and a software suite integrating solutions for the workgroup and Windows NT client/server markets. In addition, a new version of Seagate AppControl, a UNIX-based distributed applications and systems management software, will be the first system built on the SEA framework.

Point products already announced for Windows NT 4.0 include the Seagate WinINSTALL software distribution application, Seagate AshWin 3.5 job scheduler A job scheduler is an enterprise software application that is in charge of unattended background executions, commonly known for historical reasons as batch processing. They may also be known as Distributed Resource Management Systems (DRMS) or  and the Seagate WinLAND 3.0 inventory and asset management package. In development are Version 3.0 of Seagate WinSMART, which will support inventory and software metering Limiting the number of users running an application from a centralized source (server) based on the current license agreement.  for Windows NT desktop and server systems, and Seagate NerveCenter/NT, which will extend Seagate Software's powerful event correlation and automated response software for enterprise networks to include Windows NT environments.

Version 2.5 of the Seagate Desktop Management Suite, to be released in October, will include inventory control, remote control of desktop workstations, automatic software distribution, virus control and automated storage management. Version 3.0 adds software metering functionality to be delivered in December 1996.

Phase II, Through June 1997

During the first half of 1997, Seagate Software will introduce a Windows NT and NetWare server management suite combining the Seagate LANAlert management application with Seagate SeaView Web-based server management software. The combination will provide a highly scalable NT and NetWare management package pairing Seagate SeaView's ubiquitous access through a Web browser The program that serves as your front end to the Web on the Internet. In order to view a site, you type its address (URL) into the browser's Location field; for example, www.computerlanguage.com, and the home page of that site is downloaded to you.  with the robust enterprise-wide alarm management capabilities of Seagate LANAlert.

Also in Phase II, the SEA framework will be introduced for Windows NT applications, providing a first-of-its-kind system for integrating Windows NT application management, storage management, enterprise-wide software distribution and job scheduling, as well as UNIX UNIX

, Windows NT and NetWare server management. Seagate AppControl 2.0 will be delivered on Windows NT for mission-critical application management during this phase.

Phase III Noun 1. phase III - a large clinical trial of a treatment or drug that in phase I and phase II has been shown to be efficacious with tolerable side effects; after successful conclusion of these clinical trials it will receive formal approval from the FDA , Through December 1997

By the end of 1997, the SEA framework-based Seagate AppControl version 2.5 will be available with support added for managing applications, systems and desktops across the full spectrum of UNIX, Windows NT and NetWare environments. A new version of the Seagate AshWin job scheduling software will also be introduced running on the SEA framework, with the capability to schedule batch jobs through Web servers, in addition to the Windows NT and UNIX servers already supported.

Phase III development will focus on extending the policy-based management technology of Seagate AppControl to Seagate DMS and embedding native intelligence in all point products by leveraging Seagate Software's technology base of correlation software, fuzzy logic fuzzy logic, a multivalued (as opposed to binary) logic developed to deal with imprecise or vague data. Classical logic holds that everything can be expressed in binary terms: 0 or 1, black or white, yes or no; in terms of Boolean algebra, everything is in one set or  and intelligent agents.
