SEAFARERS INTERNATIONAL UNION STATEMENT ON SEA-LAND SERVICE, INC.

CAMP SPRINGS, Md., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement was made by Michael Sacco, president, Seafarers International Union of North America, AFL-CIO, on the announcement by Sea-Land Service, Inc., that it is filing an application with the U.S. government to re-flag 13 ships:
Any time there is a danger of a loss of American flag ships and a consequent loss of American jobs it is cause for deep concern not only to seamen but also to the nation as a whole.
The announcement by Sea-Land that it will attempt to re-flag 13 U.S.-flag ships has serious implications for this nation because if it materializes it will weaken the nation's employment base and diminish her economic security. Also, it will mean the additional liquidation of America's visibility as a superpower throughout the world.
The answer to the maritime industry's problems is still a comprehensive approach that will result in programs that will provide the United States a viable, balanced U.S.-flag fleet which serves the national interest.
The SIU is committed to continuing to work in that direction. We think there is the wisdom and the motivation in this country to attain a comprehensive U.S.-flag fleet. In short, we cannot envision an America without a visible presence on the high seas.
