SDMI CIRCULATES APPLICATIONS TO CURRENT SAFEWAY EMPLOYEES
RICHMOND, Calif., Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- On Friday, Jan. 31, 1992, Specialized Distribution Management Inc. (SDMI) visited Safeway's Richmond and Fremont locations, spoke with employees and distributed applications for the Tracy facility. As of Wednesday, they have received more than 200 applications from existing Safeway employees. They recognize that there are good, experienced employees currently working in Richmond and Fremont and fully expect that many of these Safeway employees will form the nucleus of their new operation.
Earlier this week, they hired the manager of the center. He is John Flanigan who until recently ran Safeway's distribution operation in Northern California. He is just now getting on the job and will begin assembling his staff and hiring employees very soon.
As SDMI told the existing Safeway employees on Friday, it is up to SDMI's employees to decide if they want union representation. If so, it is also their decision with respect to which union.
Safeway currently has two other third-party arrangements. One operates its distribution center in Sacramento and has done so since 1984; the other provides transportation services in Denver. Both are union.
SDMI is a new company owned by George and Brenda Crum who have been in the distribution business in Northern California for more than 25 years.
