The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. . The team was deployed in late summer by the Department of Homeland Security. Pusan is the 16th port to become part of the program.

"I am very pleased that the Republic of Korea has agreed to join with the United States in the Container Security Initiative The Container Security Initiative (CSI) was launched in 2002 by the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), an agency of the Department of Homeland Security. Its purpose was to increase security for container cargo shipped to the United States. ," said Robert Bonnet, commissioner, U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

"This is an important step, not only for the protection of trade between the U.S. and the Republic of Korea, but for the protection of most critical components of the world trading system as a whole--containerized cargo," said Bonner.

Supporting the presence of the Homeland Security team is a "win-win" for all parties, said Lt. Col. James Brundage, commander, 837th.

"The established force protection measures here provides out new partners with a higher level of security and allows the inspectors to concentrate on executing their operations," said Brundage. "In return, we benefit from the increased security regarding the movement of commercial containers that transit Pier 8."

The partnership is strongly endorsed by Col. Tom Harvey, commander, 599th Transportation Group, Wheeler Army Airfield Wheeler Army Airfield (IATA: HHI, ICAO: PHHI), formerly Wheeler Air Force Base, is a United States Army post located in the City & County of Honolulu and in the Wahiawa District of the Island of O'ahu, Hawaii. "Initiatives like this partnership between our battalion in Korea and the Department of Homeland Security provides a great example of two departments working together to accomplish the mission of protecting the homeland," said Harvey.

Launched by U.S. Customs in January 2003, the Container Security Initiative program consists of four core elements that include:

* Establishing security criteria for identifying and targeting high-risk containers based on advanced information.

* Prescreening containers identified as high-risk before they arrive at U.S. ports.
