SDDC's new Deputy Commanding General/Director of Operations pins on star.


The Surface Deployment and Distribution Command's new Deputy Commanding General/Director of Operations has pinned on the star of a General Officer.

Brig. Gen. Mark E. Scheid was promoted Oct. 17 in a ceremony at the SDDC SDDC Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (formerly Military Traffic Management Command)

 for Scheid's new duty responsibility of running operations for SDDC's global distribution of Department of Defense surface cargoes. Scheid will also direct 24 SDDC terminal units located around the world.

The ceremony was officiated by Gen. Kevin Byrnes, commander, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, Fort Monroe Fort Monroe, SE Va., commanding the entrance to Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads; named for President James Monroe. The fortress (80 acres/32 hectares) was built (1819–34) by the U.S. government on the site of English fortifications erected in 1609 and 1727. , Va.

"This is a great day for the Army and a great day to recognize excellence," said Byrnes.

Byrnes praised Scheid's background which included serving as the Chief, Joint Movement Control Center, in Kuwait City, Kuwait, supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom, from late in 2002 until June 15, 2003.

"The stars are on the right shoulders," Byrnes said. "He is exactly the type of leader that we need in this Army, with our nation at war."

Scheid has been running the SDDC Operations Center since the Sept. 30 retirement of Brig. Gen. Barbara Doornink.

"It's been a great ride, so far," said Scheid.

The work in Iraqi transportation movements was a good introduction to the SDDC and its partners. Scheid often interacted with the warfighters and customers, working directly with SDDC and the Military Sealift Command A major command of the US Navy, and the US Transportation Command's component command responsible for designated common-user sealift transportation services to deploy, employ, sustain, and redeploy US forces on a global basis. "I'm glad to still be a part of this team," said Scheid. "I look forward to the many challenges we have ahead."

Assigned to U.S. Central Command, MacDill Air Force Base MacDill Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base in Hillsborough County, Florida, eight miles south of downtown Tampa at the tip of the Interbay Peninsula. It also has city district status due to the fact that the base is technically within the city limits of Tampa. , Fla., in June 2000 as Chief, Plans Division, J-4, Scheid deployed to Kuwait in late 2002.

A graduate of Bowling Green University, Toledo, Ohio, Scheid was commissioned as a second lieutenant through the Reserve Officers Training Corps.

Scheid served al Fort Eustis in his initial Army assignment as a platoon leader with 7th Transportation Group's 119th Transportation Co. His 26-year Army career includes overseas assignments in Germany, Korea and Bosnia.

Scheid is a graduate of the U.S. Marine Corps War College, Quantico, Va.
