Bowman Continuation School has an enrollment of 300, while the Golden Oak Adult School has 100 students in independent study. The district also has a student partnership program to give special attention to those who have been identified as potential dropouts. The state report is filled with statistics - from the number of students who come from families on welfare to the number of graduates who have gone on to college. ``All this data is compiled with our own information and used to see where our strengths are, where are weaknesses exist and what we can do to make improvements,'' Wexler said. Hart topped the list with 32 percent of the students enrolled in AP classes, Saugus had 13 percent and Canyon just under 12 percent. Wexler said Hart, the district's first school, has built a tradition of top academics and has embraced AP classes. He credited Hart Vice Principal Ruth Port, who developed the district's AP program and incentives for schools to offer the classes. ``Part of the reason for the outstanding AP program at Hart is definitely because of her. There's no doubt,'' he said. Wexler also noted that counselors at Saugus and Canyon - as well as Valencia - might encourage students to attend AP courses offered at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. for both high school and college credit. Hart also takes first place in academic performance based on the number of students who complete courses required for entrance to state universities and for scores on the Scholastic Assessment Tests. Forty percent more of Hart's seniors took college-bound classes than students at Saugus and Canyons, and nearly 39 percent scored about the national average on the SAT test compared to 26.5 percent at Saugus and 21 percent at Canyon. ``There's a lot of history there at Hart, a lot of stable leadership,'' Wexler said. Wexler noted that the state figures showing about 53 percent of the district graduates go on to college did not include the 13 percent that district studies show go to private and out-of-state colleges.
