It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. , participated in the second annual Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. Regional Bowling Tournament hosted by the Santa Clarita Valley Special Olympics Special Olympics International sports program for people with intellectual disability. It provides year-round training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type summer and winter sports for participants. Aug. 23 at Valencia Lanes. Several local athletes took home gold medals, including the Tigers, a team composed of Marcia Hickman, Pamela Murphey, Malia Schneiderman and Sherry Stanton, which took first place in the female division. The gold medal winner in the men's wheelchair division was Ron Hoover, another local athlete, and the female wheelchair winner was Beth Brodie from Tri-Valley Special Olympics. Athletes as young as 8 years old participated. Santa Clarita recently added a new addition to its bowling program, in part due to a Community Service Grant awarded by the city of Santa Clarita. ``Unified Bowling'' was initiated this year, which pairs two Special Olympics' athletes with two nondisabled peer partners from the community. This inaugural pilot program features four Special Olympic Unified Teams. Volunteers are needed for the next Santa Clarita Valley Special Olympics competition, scheduled for Oct. 11. The cycling event at Saugus Speedway requires timers, lap counters and volunteers to assist with registration and serving meals.
