to include certain Cisco networking curriculum into the Society's current Professional Development offerings.

The goal of the relationship between the two organizations is to provide an opportunity for individuals to learn about networking and information technology (IT) to advance their careers in cable telecommunications. Initially, SCTE periodically will offer certain Cisco courses in the Greater Philadelphia area, where SCTE is headquartered. The goal is to eventually expand the reach of SCTE's Cisco Academy offerings throughout North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. .

"Cisco has a long-standing association in helping foster the mission of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers," said Paul Bosco, Cisco vice president of cable and video initiatives. "That is why this new relationship means so much to the employees of Cisco, Scientific Atlanta and Linksys, many of whom are active members of SCTE. This program represents a true collaboration among all groups."

"The SCTE Board of Directors and the board's Professional Development Committee have committed the Society to elevating the level of knowledge in networking technologies," said SCTE Vice President, Professional Development Marv Nelson. "Being able to offer networking curriculum such as that provided through Cisco's Networking Academy Program is a huge first step toward achieving that goal."

Launched in 1997, the Cisco Networking Academy Program has been established in more than 11,000 academic institutions in 160 countries with curricula taught in nine languages. More than 400,000 students are active in academies in high schools, colleges and universities, technical schools, community-based organizations, and other educational programs around the world. The Cisco Networking Academy Program's blended learning Blended Learning is the combination of multiple approaches to learning. Blended learning can be accomplished through the use of 'blended' virtual and physical resources. A typical example of this would be a combination of technology-based materials and face-to-face sessions used  model integrates face-to-face teaching with a challenging Web-based curriculum, hands-on lab exercises, and Internet-based assessment.

As a Cisco Networking Academy, SCTE will offer courses mapped to Cisco Systems' Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA See Cisco certification. ) certification, thus helping individuals to progress in their careers and prepare for industry-recognized certification. Many individuals participating in SCTE's offerings likely will come from Multiple System Operators (MSOs) where they are working in an increasingly networked, data-centric environment. SCTE presentations of this program allow for cable-specific application of the content. In addition to networking and IT skills, the curricula also reinforces IT literacy, problem-solving, communication, and working with others from diverse backgrounds.
