SCRIPPS HOWARD BROADCASTING TO SELL RADIO DIVISION

CINCINNATI, March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Scripps Howard Broadcasting (NASDAQ: SCRP) today announced a decision to offer for sale its four radio stations: WVRT-FM, Baltimore; KUPL-AM & FM, Portland (Ore.); and WMC-AM and WMC-FM, Memphis, Tenn.
The investment banking firm of Donaldson, Lukfin & Jenrette has been engaged to seek buyers for the stations.
"Radio has been a very small component of our broadcast business," said Lawrence A. Leser, president and chief executive officer of both Scripps Howard Broadcasting and its parent, The E.W. Scripps Company (NYSE: SSP). "Following a review of our broadcast properties, we decided to focus our attention on what we know best - television."
Radio accounted for $12.5 million, or 3 percent, of Scripps Howard Broadcasting's total revenue last year, compared to 68 percent from broadcast television and 29 percent from cable television.
WVRT in Baltimore, which recently changed its call letters from WBSB, offers a soft rock format and is located at FM 104.3. KUPL, Portland's top country music station, is simulcast on AM 1330 and FM 98.5.
WMC-AM 790, Memphis, has a news/talk format, while its sister station, WMC-FM 99.7, is adult contemporary.
In addition to the radio stations, Scripps Howard Broadcasting operates four NBC television affiliates, in Baltimore, West Palm Beach, Fla., Memphis, and Tulsa, Okla.; three Fox affiliates, in Phoenix, Ariz., Tampa, Fla., and Kansas City; two ABC affiliates, in Detroit and Cleveland; and one CBS affiliate, in Cincinnati.
The company's cable systems have 282,300 basic subscribers in three states.
Scripps Howard Broadcasting is an 86 percent-owned subsidiary of The E.W. Scripps Company (NYSE: SSP).
