Byline: Lisa M. Sodders Staff Writer

Hundreds of high school students from across Southern California squared off Saturday for the Academic Decathlon decathlon (dĭkăth`lŏn), in modern Olympic games, a contest for men held over two days and composed of 10 track-and-field events.  scrimmage tests, the first step on a path that could lead to a national championship.

Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population. , Ventura County, Los Angeles County and area private schools took the seven multiple-choice tests in everything from art to economics in preparation for regional competitions in January and February.

``It gives me more of a sense of what it's going to be like in February,'' said Taft High School student Monica Schettler, 17, of Tarzana, a first-time decathlete de·cath·lete

Cliff Ker, LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA)  Academic Decathlon coordinator, said he expects to have 60 teams in regional competition, including Northridge Academy High School Northridge Academy High School is a public, co-educational, secondary school consisting of students in Grades 9-12.
