The two branches of the Writers Guild of America The Writers Guild of America is a term often referring to the joint efforts of the Writers Guild of America, East and the Writers Guild of America, west. Jointly, the two guilds act as the collective bargaining representative, or labor union, for writers in the motion picture and  announced their joint nominations Wednesday for screenplay achievements of 1997, with newcomers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck among the finalists.

Damon and Affleck are nominated for best screenplay written directly for the screen for ``Good Will Hunting,'' in which they also co-starred.

They'll compete with Mark Andrus and James L. Brooks for ``As Good as It Gets''; Paul Thomas Paul Thomas (born Paul Anthony Thomas, 5 October 1980, Waldorf, Maryland, United States) is the bassist of the band, Good Charlotte. ``The Wings of the Dove,'' screenplay by Hossein Amini, based on the novel by Henry James.

Damon and Affleck, first-time nominees and longtime friends, won the Golden Globe Award last month for their screenplay about a troubled mathematical genius.

Affleck is the second youngest nominee for best screenplay in the WGA's 50- year awards show history. The youngest was John Singleton for ``Boyz N the Hood'' in 1990.

With the exception of Attanasio, Mamet and Brooks, all of the other writers are also first-time WGA nominees.

Attanasio was previously nominated for ``Quiz Show,'' his first produced screenplay, as well as for his writing on ``Homicide: Life on the Street,'' the television drama series he co-created.

Mamet was previously nominated for ``Glengarry Glen Ross,'' ``The Untouchables'' and ``The Verdict.''

Brooks won a WGA award for ``Terms of Endearment'' and was also nominated for ``Broadcast News.'' In addition to being up for a screenwriting award, Brooks will receive this year's Paddy Chayefsky TV Laurel Award, along with writer Allan Burns, in recognition of his body of work on the small screen.

The winners will be announced Feb. 21 at the 50th annual Writers Guild Awards ceremonies on both coasts. The WGA West ceremony will be held at the Beverly Hilton hotel.
