Debbie Reynozo as the teens and pre-teens sewed the 16-inch stockings and then added lace, fringe and other colorful trimmings.

For some of the girls from troops 1415, 1587 and 1912, it was their first time at a sewing machine sewing machine, device that stitches cloth and other materials. An attempt at mechanical sewing was made in England (1790) with a machine having a forked, automatic needle that made a single-thread chain. In 1830, B. .

``That's the third time I forgot to put the (presser) foot down,'' Karina Alvarado, 12, of Van Nuys said with a laugh as she sewed a hem on a red felt stocking.

At first, she was a little scared of the machines and worried that she might sew over a finger. But, after some practice, ``I really love it,'' she said.

A second set of Girl Scouts will be back next Saturday at the Sewing Machine Warehouse in Northridge to sew more stockings, for a total of about 150 stockings, which will be stuffed with holiday goodies by Holly Grove Children and Family Services in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  and then given to foster children.

This is the third year the Girl Scouts of the San Fernando Valley have made stockings.

``I think it's really great because children who don't have parents don't really get presents,'' Karina Alvarado said. ``Thank God we have our parents. I really want to help the community.''

Bethany Fitch, 9, of Northridge has been sewing since she was 7, and was taught by her grandmother.

``I think the creativeness of doing it yourself, instead of buying it from a store, is the cool thing about it,'' Fitch said as she finished a stocking made out of a blue-and-white holiday print.

Tessa Silveti, 12, of Panorama City enjoyed using the sewing machine so much she asked her mother, Rose, if she could have one for Christmas.

``It was a great experience,'' Tessa said. ``It's not as hard as I thought.''

``The Girl Scouts want to give back to the community this holiday season and we're proud to help,'' said Scott Goodman Scott Goodman (born August 20, 1973) is an Australian butterfly swimmer, who competed at the Atlanta Olympics, winning a bronze medal in the 200m butterfly.

Born and raised in Tasmania, Goodman was selected for his debut at the 1991 Pan Pacific Championships, but then missed
, president of the Sewing Machine Warehouse, who convinced the Singer Co. to donate 12 sewing machines to the Girl Scouts for their projects.

``We hope it will spark a little creativity within them,'' Goodman said of the Girl Scouts. ``If they get past the intimidation of the machine, it allows them to be creative.''
