Byline: Lisa M. Sodders Staff Writer

WOODLAND HILLS - More than 300 Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts went door-to-door Saturday from Reseda to Agoura Hills, collecting enough food to feed 900 families for a month.

The nonperishable food will be donated to the West Valley Food Pantry at Prince of Peace Episcopal Church Episcopal Church, Anglican church of the United States. Its separate existence as an American ecclesiastical body with its own episcopate began in 1789. Doctrine and Organization

The Scouts had distributed collection bags in dozens of neighborhoods the week before. While some residents had already filled them, others rushed to grab canned goods when the Scouts knocked on their doors.

Richard Reno, 52, of Woodland Hills, a sheet metal contractor, was on his way to work Saturday when Scouts Matt Young, 15, and Kyle Debiase, 12, both of Woodland Hills, paid a visit. He stopped and gave them cans of tomato soup Tomato soup is a soup made from tomatoes. ``I think it's awesome,'' Reno said. ``If more young people were to do this, then it would definitely help all of us.''

``Awesome'' is also what Kyle's brother, 9-year-old Joel Debiase, thought of the project, as he lugged a plastic bag brimming brim

``First of all, that house had everything ready. Secondly, we're beating the older kids. And third, I'm having a blast!'' he said breathlessly.

His companion, 9-year-old Evan Eiermann of Reseda, was pleased with the quality of the donations. ``People are giving a lot of spaghetti, and spaghetti is my favorite My Favorite is an independent synthpop band from Long Island, New York. Steven Sandler, 37, of Woodland Hills gave the Scouts an armload of tuna and canned vegetables, including canned asparagus asparagus, perennial garden vegetable (Asparagus officinalis) of the family Liliaceae (lily family), native to the E Mediterranean area and now naturalized over much of the world. .

``I'm not a big vegetable eater,'' he said. ``I always buy these with the best of intentions, and then I go out for pizza.''

``With the holidays coming up, there are people who are not as fortunate, and we're trying to make it better for them,'' said Eliot Brown, chairman of the Scouting scouting: see Boy Scouts; Girl Scouts.

Margaret Shively, pantry coordinator for the West Valley Food Pantry at Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, said the Scouts' collection would feed the pantry's clients for at least a month. The pantry provides food for about 900 families a month.

``It's not just the homeless - it's the low-income, and people trying to live on just Social Security, and it doesn't stretch far,'' Shively said. ``We really feed the working poor.''

She said the pantry sees increasing demand in the winter months, and hopes the Scouts' efforts will remind other people of the tremendous need for donations.

``People are not only hungry at Thanksgiving and Christmas - they're hungry the other 10 months of the year,'' said Shively, who works with 150 volunteers to run the pantry.
