SCOUTING REPORT.Byline: - Erik Boal How they got here It's only fitting that the two teams that started the season ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports wind up meeting in the Div. I state championship bowl game. Concord De La Salle De La Salle is the name of several educational institutions affiliated with the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, also known as the Lasallian Brothers, a Roman Catholic religious teaching order founded by French priest Saint Jean-Baptiste de la Salle: Cincinnati is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Hamilton County. , at the USA vs. Ohio Challenge and followed with a 35-28 triumph over Mission Viejo Mission Vi·e·jo A community of southern California southeast of Irvine. The Spartans cruised through the North Coast Section playoffs, defeating Foothill of Pleasanton 33-7 to capture their 15th consecutive title and 20th overall. Canyon of Canyon Country, ranked as high as No. 12 nationally to open the season, lost two of its first three games, but has since rebounded to win 10 in a row, including victories over Crespi of Encino, Hart of Newhall, Westlake and a 24-22 come-from-behind win over Moorpark in last week's Southern Section Northern Division final. Offense Canyon: The Cowboys boast one of their most balanced attacks in Harry Welch's 18-year tenure, with senior running back J.J. DiLuigi (2,022 yards, 38 touchdowns) leading an impressive ground game that occasionally features Kenny Shanahan in short-yardage situations. After a rough start to the season, in which he threw 10 interceptions in his first 126 pass attempts, quarterback Ben Longshore long·shore adj. Occurring, living, or working along a seacoast. [Short for alongshore.] (2,669 yards, 22 touchdowns) has been a steady performer during Canyon's run to back- to-back Southern Section titles, throwing only two interceptions in his past 146attempts. Stephen Wirthlin, Chris Kingsbury, Anthony Arriaga and Michael Loucks are all capable targets, as well as DiLuigi out of the backfield. De La Salle: The Spartans possess one of the most punishing running attacks in the state with Tim Maupin and Tillman Pugh, who have combined for more than 2,300 yards and 35touchdowns. Junior quarterback Mike MacGillivray is also a threat to run, having rushed for almost 500yards and 11 touchdowns. In De La Salle's ball-control offense, MacGillivray (1,111 passing yards, eight TDs) relies on John Hendershott (36 receptions, 663 yards) as his primary target. The Spartans' offensive line is anchored by Tyler Hess, who has committed to play baseball at Pepperdine, and Stephen Valenzuela. Defense Canyon: The Cowboys' defensive line will again be tested by the powerful, technically sound front of De La Salle, but if their performance in last week's game against Moorpark was any indication, the tougher the challenge, the better Canyon performs. Maupin and Pugh will be a handful to deal with, but the Cowboys held Moorpark's Darrell Scott For Darrell Scott, the "Rachel's Challenge" founder of this name, see . Darrell Scott is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He has written several mainstream country hits, and also has established himself as one of Nashville's premier session (3,194 yards, 46 TDs) to a season-low 118 yards. The linebacking corps of Blake McMartin, Nick Jurado and Michael Pyne will need to stretch out the field and not allow Maupin and Pugh to run consistently between the tackles. Canyon's secondary will also need to avoid letting up any big plays, especially with injuries to Kingsbury and Loucks leaving Canyon at less than 100 percent in the secondary. De La Salle: Brady Amack and Albert Rosette Rosette D’Albert’s pliable, versatile, talented, acknowledged bedmate. [Fr. Lit.: Mademoiselle de Maupin. Albert Siu, De La Salle's leader with eight sacks, looks to provide pressure up front against Canyon's veteran offensive line. Hendershott is a two-way standout, providing the Spartans additional athleticism and versatility in the secondary, where he is joined by defensive backs Lonnie Wishom and Bryon Colbert. De La Salle has relied on a bend, but don't break defense, often leading to teams scoring points, just not enough to keep pace with the Spartans' offense. Keys to success Canyon: Having already competed against one of the toughest schedules in the state, the Cowboys won't be intimidated in·tim·i·date tr.v. in·tim·i·dat·ed, in·tim·i·dat·ing, in·tim·i·dates 1. Longshore can ill-afford a slow start like the one he had against Moorpark if Canyon expects to win. If the Cowboys have the lead or can remain close entering the second half, they've demonstrated they can win games down the stretch like they did last week in the Northern Division final. De La Salle: If the Spartans can avoid turnovers, some of which led their nonleague games to remain closer than expected, it will be tough for Canyon to consistently force the Spartans into second- and third-and-long situations because of the presence of Maupin and Pugh. Although Canyon has won five Southern Section titles, no team in the state is as big-game tested as De La Salle, which has enjoyed past success in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. The Spartans are also healthier entering the game than Canyon, so their depth could play a factor if De La Salle leads in the second half.
