SCOUT SEES HIS PROJECT TO FINISH.

Byline: Daily News

SAUGUS - Santa Clarita, in the midst of a health and fitness campaign, will open a new disc golf course today at Central Park, a project completed with the help of an Eagle Scout candidate.

Scout Michael Morrisette will be at the 9:30 a.m. grand opening ceremony along with city officials who were planning the project when he stepped into help.

Disc - or Frisbee - golf is similar to miniature golf, but players compete by throwing plastic discs into a series of target ``holes.'' The sport is gaining popularity and is viewed as a fun and simple way to exercise. The city is pushing health and fitness efforts in its Health Santa Clarita program.

Fifteen-year-old Morrisette will be joined by other Scouts and city officials in inaugurating the course. The Eagle Scout candidate approached the city as it was working on plans to establish the course and won approval to help guide plans for the nine-hole project that was completed in less than a year.

The course is in the northeast corner of the Saugus park, behind the softball fields. Shaded by dozens of trees, it features a natural wood chip playing service and the nine basketlike ``holes'' that sit on poles about 4 feet off the ground.

The first 100 people to show up for today's grand opening will receive free playing discs from the city.

Central Park is at 27150 Bouquet Canyon Road.
