SCOTTS FISCAL SECOND QUARTER SALES FORECAST

MARYSVILLE, Ohio, April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The Scotts Company (NASDAQ: SCTT) announced today that it expects to report sales for the period ended March 31, 1993 of approximately $160.9 million, an increase of about 6.7 percent over last year's fiscal second quarter. The company said that sales for the quarter were adversely affected by unusually severe winter weather that plagued most of the United States during the month of March.
Excluding Republic Tool and Manufacturing, which Scotts acquired in November of 1992, sales of basic Scotts/Hyponex products are expected to be up approximately 1.0 percent for the quarter. The company did not offer any second quarter earnings projections. The company expects to report second quarter earnings on May 12.
Tadd C. Seitz, Scotts' chairman and chief executive officer, said, "Sales for the fiscal year October through February were up almost 14 percent. Like many consumer-related companies, we felt the full effect of the blizzard that dropped our March sales below last year's levels and brought year-to-date sales results back to an increase of approximately 7.7 percent."
Mr. Seitz added: "Last year we also experienced a late Spring, but we managed to turn out a record year. We fully expect to see the positive impact of Spring weather on this year's April and May sales. With effective new products, consumer promotions, targeted advertising and in-store merchandising programs in place, we hope to recapture sales delayed in March and finish the year with sales around the 12 to 15 percent growth target."
With sales of $413 million in fiscal year 1992, Scotts is the country's leading producer and marketer of consumer do-it-yourself lawn care and professional golf course turf care products. The company's Turf Builder products are the nation's most popular lawn care fertilizers and fertilizer/control combinations. The company's Hyponex products are the nation's leading line of organic products, including top soils, potting soils, composted manures and bark mulches. Through Republic Tool & Manufacturing Company, Scotts offers a full line of lawn spreaders and other lawn and garden equipment under the "EZ" label and under retailers' private labels.
