Scott struggled with her shooting in the past. Knocking down free throws has now become as easy as . . . well, as roping a calf.

``My dad yells at me to look at the middle of the horns when I am shooting,'' Scott said. ``Everybody thinks he is joking but I guess it works.''

Basketball, however, is merely a pastime for Scott, who hopes to attend Cal Poly Cal Poly may refer to:

In July, Scott was selected to the California team for the national high school rodeo championships in Gilette, Wyoming.

Last year, Scott also won the age 14-18 California Junior Rodeo Association all-around title and was the state runner-up in barrel racing in the high school rodeo state championships. In addition, the national high school rodeo association The National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA) was incorporated in 1961 to promote interest in rodeo sports among high school students, to provide training, and to establish venues for their performances. The overall objective was to keep students from dropping out of school.  named Scott co-captain of the Wrangler wran·gler

Scott has a long family tradition in rodeo. Her grandfather, Walter Edward Scott, and father, Walter Dan Scott ''This article or section is being rewritten at Daniel "Dan" Robert Scott is a fictional character on the television show One Tree Hill played by Paul Johansson.

Aunt Tracey Scott, the Santa Clarita Christian basketball coach, and uncle Ben also participate. Cousins Wyatt, 14, Paul, 10, and Carolann Scott, 8, are active in junior rodeo.

Basketball, conversely, has been a new experience for the Scott family, particularly the team aspect.

``It's not like other sports, where the best team wins'' Scott said.

Scott has always been intrigued with basketball. She helped found the girls' team at Santa Clarita Christian and drummed up interest by circulating a petition in the sixth grade. Ann's aunt, who had no basketball background, volunteered to coach the junior high program and moved on with the players to become varsity coach for the last four seasons.

Ann and senior center Hillary Graham have played for all six years of the program's existence. The 5-8 Scott was also an outside hitter on the volleyball team for the last four years and earned all-league honors last fall.

``I've done rodeo all my life,'' Ann said. ``I only played basketball with the boys at recess. My aunt and I started reading books. We learned together.''

Last season, Santa Clarita Christian won its first league title in school history and advanced to the second round of the Southern Section Division V-A V-A

playoffs. This season, the Cardinals are 8-2 and favored to repeat as Westside League champion.

Ann's accolades have not come without sacrifice. Three years ago, she broke her ankle playing basketball but won the junior rodeo all-around title despite competing with the injury heavily taped and ``lots of Advil and ice.''

Ann works out nearly three hours daily year-round on the Scott's 11- acre property, training with her roping quarterhorse, Benny, and barrel racing horses Lilly and Zoom. Scott often trains well into the evening after basketball games and practices roping, barrel racing and goat tying.

On weekends, Scott spends afternoons training in the family's 300- by 160-foot arena with relatives and friends. World champion team ropers Brian Burrows and Shawn Howell also drop by occasionally to lend their expertise.

Basketball fits in nicely into Scott's schedule as offseason conditioning with sparse rodeo competitions from November through February. Scott competes almost every weekend the remainder of the year.

``Rodeo shuts down and it works really perfect with basketball,'' Tracey Scott said. ``You give the horses a little break off. It's cold and it's nice to be indoors digging basketball in the dead of winter.''
