ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. The planes carry up to 1,621 gallons, but have been criticized by firefighters who say they cannot be used in tandem with water- and retardant-dropping helicopters that often are more effective in fighting brush fires.

For years, the county has leased the aircraft, in the county earlier than usual this year because of the continuing high fire danger. Already 36,000 acres have burned this year in the Antelope and Santa Clarita valleys. Three wild fires from Newhall to the Lake Hughes area burned in early July, two or three months before the usual start of the fire season.

The National Forest Service had issued a red flag warning A Red Flag Warning is a forecast warning issued by the United States National Weather Service to tell area firefighting and land management agencies that conditions are ideal for wildland fire ignition and propagation.  Monday through Wednesday signifying a high fire risk. Ongoing drought has dried vegetation and triple-digit temperatures and low humidity this week added to the danger.

The high temperature hit 107 Wednesday in Santa Clarita, and 106 in the Antelope Valley where wind gusts reached 25 mph.

Cooler temperatures are expected today and through the holiday weekend.

Both valleys will see high temperatures in the low 90s through Monday, according to the Weather Service.
