SCO DELIVERS KEY WEB-ENABLING TECHNOLOGY FOR NEW IBM SERVICE PROVIDER INITIATIVE: Deal Accelerates SCO's Tarantella Into Emerging Application Service Provider (ASP) Market.

Santa Cruz-based Unix market leader SCO (The SCO Group, Lindon, UT, www.sco.com) A leading vendor of Unix operating systems for the x86 platform. SCO had also offered Linux, but abandoned the line in the spring of 2003. The SCO Group is the combination of two companies: Utah-based Caldera, Inc.  has expanded an existing relationship with IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) , becoming a key partner in a new service provider initiative under which IBM will promote SCO's Tarantella tarantella (târ`əntĕl`ə), Neapolitan folk dance that first appeared in Taranto, Italy, in the 17th cent. It had rapid 6–8 meter with an increasing tempo and was thought to cure the bite of the tarantula, which supposedly  web-enabling software as an offering for application service providers (ASPs), enabling them to quickly deploy existing applications for rent over the Web. IBM and SCO are planning joint marketing activities targeted at the service provider market in the near future.

Tarantella's architecture allows application service providers to instantly web-enable existing applications and make them available quickly and securely to any number of users, anywhere.

"The service provider market has emerged as one of the ideal markets for Tarantella and we are thrilled to expand our presence in this market with IBM," says Mick Adamson, general manager of the Tarantella Business Unit at SCO. "Unlike other partial solutions on the market, Tarantella is a true cross-platform solution that has the speed, security, and reliability the service provider market demands. We intend to make serious headway into the service provider space and look forward to doing so with IBM's new initiative."

In June, SCO and IBM announced an agreement for IBM to provide a two- user version of Tarantella for AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) IBM's Unix-based operating system which runs on its Intellistation workstations and pSeries, p5, iSeries and i5 server families.  users at no charge, allowing AIX customers to evaluate the tool.
