By implementing the SwapSmart PC card (PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, San Jose, CA, www.pcmcia.org) An international standards body and trade association that was founded in 1989 to establish a standard for connecting peripherals to portable computers. PCMCIA created the PC Card. See PC Card. ) smart card reader/writer within the NetSign mobile security solution, unauthorized users are denied access to protected data stored on corporate networks. For authorized users, access to data is enabled, as well as the exchange of encrypted and digitally signed electronic mail, all with the freedom provided by a portable computer.

"As a leader in Internet security technology, Netscape is making it even safer for Netscape Communicator users to access information from the network while on the road," said Taher Elgamal, chief scientist at Netscape Communications Corporation (company) Netscape Communications Corporation - (Formlerly "Mosaic Communications Corporation", MCC) A company set up in April 1994 by Dr. James H. Litronic's complete Web security solution is based upon CryptOS and NetSign which provide an interface to smart card readers such as SCM Microsystems' SwapSmart. The SwapSmart reader is especially appropriate for Department of Defense computers that are equipped with PC card adapters. CryptOS and NetSign provide an interface to smart card readers, such as SCM Microsystems' SwapSmart, adding hardware strength cryptography and enhancing software technologies such as Secure Sockets Layer (networking, security) Secure Sockets Layer - (SSL) A protocol designed by Netscape Communications Corporation to provide secure communications over the Internet using asymmetric key encryption.  (SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) The leading security protocol on the Internet. Developed by Netscape, SSL is widely used to do two things: to validate the identity of a Web site and to create an encrypted connection for sending credit card and other personal data. ) and Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (messaging, standard) Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions - (S-MIME) A specification for secure electronic mail. S-MIME was designed to add security to e-mail messages in MIME format.  (S/MIME See MIME. ). CryptOS is a value-added security middleware, which seamlessly adds smart card security to existing software applications, and NetSign is fully integrated with NetScape's implementation of SSL for secure transport, authentication and authorization, and Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME) for protected electronic mail.

SCM Microsystems' SwapSmart reader provides a portable, universal and cost-effective bridge between smart cards and the mobile PC. SwapSmart supports all ISO (1) See ISO speed.
